Davidson Solanki, USPG’s Regional Manager for Asia and the Middle East, was ordained as a deacon at St Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday 27 September.
Davidson’s ordination was the culmination of years of discernment, study and reflection, going all the way back to 1983. Originally a mechanical engineer by profession, Davidson studied for a Masters in Peace and Reconciliation studies and worked for the relief agencies World Vision India and Tearfund prior to joining USPG in 2014. In 2015, Davidson applied to the Church of England through Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hounslow for Ordination training. After selection, he started three (part time) years of ordination training at St Mellitus College where he studied for a BA in Theology, Mission and Ministry before completing his training in June 2020.
Davidson’s ordination was initially meant to take place in July but was postponed to September in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. In order for Davidson to be able to start his curacy before September, he was licensed as a Lay Minister on 1 July. Again, thanks to Covid, this took place via Zoom. Davidson’s wife Deepika and their son and daughter-in-law were amongst the socially distanced guests for his special day at St Paul’s, whilst his wider family and friends watched the service live on YouTube.
