The prophetic voice of the Church - Lent 2019

Our five-week study course for Lent 2019 looks at the radical nature of
the gospel, with a special focus on the church in India.

A member of the Tagar self-help group, Kalinagar village, near Kolkata

We might think the prophetic voice belongs to the Old Testament, but we want to show there are still many prophets to be found throughout the world church today.

The prophets’ voices are challenging because they alert us to issues we might want to ignore - they call us to be like Jesus, who stood on the margins, comforting the oppressed and challenging those who are
comfortable.

Study 1: Community – inspiring congregations to be dynamic in mission.

Study 2: Injustice – taking action to combat human trafficking.

Study 3: Gender – a skills training programme is giving women a new lease of life.

Study 4: Climate – schools are inspiring a new generation to care for the environment.

Study 5: Hope – giving hope to India’s marginalised Dalit and tribal peoples.

Lent Fundraising Ideas:

Why not organise a fundraiser for USPG to coincide with using the study course? You could organise a USPG Big Curry Lunch to raise awareness and funds for the work of the Churches of North and South India. All funds raised over Lent will be split equally between these two churches, and the amazing work they are doing. Invite friends and family round to yours for an Indian meal and ask for a donation, or why not book a space at your nearest Indian restaurant and invite the local community? You could hold a raffle to raise extra funds, and ask local businesses to donate prizes. For support with your fundraising ideas, please contact our Volunteering and Stewardship Manager Rebecca Woollgar on 020 7921 2220 or email

This year, for the first time, we are providing a weekly e-newsletter for the six weeks over Lent, with extra resources, including video clips, case studies, bible verses and fundraising ideas for you and your group. To sign up the receive this special Lent e-newsletter, please email Gwen Mtambirwa on
