St James' Hospital is offering a unique medical outreach to the community of Mantšonyane high up in the mountains of Lesotho. It does a remarkable job despite its limited resources, this includes running a comprehensive AIDS awareness programme, a training a training programme for local volunteer health workers, a clean-water scheme and much, much more.
70 AIDS-related deaths every day
A recent UNICEF report predicted that almost a quarter of Lesotho's children would be orphaned by 2010.
Lesotho has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection in the world and an average life expectancy of just 34 years. There are around 70 AIDS-related deaths per day, primarily in the 14- to 24-year age group.
St James' Hospital employs a social worker, who co-ordinates a comprehensive HIV/AIDS awareness programme in order to combat the stigma of the disease. Staff also provide support and counselling for those living with HIV/AIDS, and run a volunteer health worker programme which trains locals in basic medical care.
Health promotion programme
The hospital staff work hard to help the many isolated villagers who rely on them for care. But the Hospital is not simply concerned with treatment. In order to prevent disease, St James' also runs a clean water scheme, providing professional expertise, pipes and cement for new water systems.
USPG mission companion Dr Elizabeth Hills
Dr Hills is based at St James' Hospital - having come out of retirement to meet their urgent need for a doctor. When Elizabeth arrived in January 2006, there was no treatment for HIV/AIDS at St James' Hospital, Mantšonyane. 'I think God has put me here to get the HIV treatment organised... by the end of 2006 we had started 73 patients on antiretroviral treatment - which includes extensive counselling and testing. Please pray that we can continue to help the many more patients who need to start treatment.'
