Reaching out to Ethiopia

Support Bishop Andrew and Janice Proud as they develop outreach work and train church leaders
Ethiopia remains one of Africa's poorest nations: many Ethiopians rely on food aid from abroad. After the 1974 revolution, strong state controls were implemented and a large part of the ceremony was transferred to the public sector. It is in this context that USPG is supporting mission companions Bishop Andrew and Janice Proud.
Responding to the needs of the people
Andrew and Janice are based at St Matthew's Church in Addis Ababa, where they have developed the church's outreach programmes, which recently saw them helping to repatriate many Sudanese refugees.
An ever-changing ministry
USPG has been in partnership with the Anglican Church in Ethiopia for many years. St Matthew's is the original and main Anglican Church. It has a congregation of over 200, with 20 or more different nationalities represented within it, only 20 per cent of whom are cradle Anglicans.
In addition to developing their ministry among the Christian community in Addis, the Prouds have helped change the lives of families in the Kabele (urban villages) by supplying school materials, uniforms and fees for children. They have also planted several churches. Over the next few years, Andrew and Janice plan to train leaders and encourage them to further develop the church's outreach work that they have begun, with a particular emphasis on work with AIDS orphans.
