Children First

Help children in Ghana, India and Malaysia have the hope of a better future

Today, 640 million children are living without adequate shelter. 400 million have no access to safe water, and 270 million have no access to healthcare. These are massive problems, but by partnering with church-run initiatives such as these Children First is making a real difference to the lives of many children.

Looking after orphans

Half of the world's 2.2 billion children are living in poverty. A third are living without adequate shelter. There are 143 million orphaned children in the developing world.

The Anglican Church worldwide is taking these challenges seriously and is reaching out to children through a range of much-needed programmes which provide hope, health, housing, education and a better future.

Children First brings together four such programmes: a babies' home in Ghana, school hostels in India, and a home for children with visual and aural impairments in Malaysia.

Mampong Babies Home in Ghana looks after 30 babies at a time. The home gives children and babies who have lost their mothers a chance to live and be cared for in a caring, homely environment until they are able to return to the care of extended family.

School hostels in India provide accommodation, healthcare, food and clothing to the poorest of the poor. Children who would otherwise not be able to afford education are given pencils, books and uniforms, enabling them to attend school.

St Nicholas' Home for the Blind in Malaysia provides its residents with the emotional, social and physical skills necessary for independent living.
